NCB students ‘do something different’ for Children In Need

Raising money for Children In Need

NCB students at cake sale

Students at New Campus Basildon held a ‘no bake’ cake sale in a bid to raise money for Children In Need. The BTEC Business Studies students were also able to link their charity fundraising with their studies as part of the communication and customer service and managing money units of their course.

“An activity like this helps the students to learn how to treat customers professionally and communicate effectively whilst raising money for a good cause.”

Charlotte McQuaid, Business Studies Tutor

To make the cake sale a success the students were given the task of creating cakes that did not need to be cooked. They had to agree on a budget, based on how much they thought they could make from the sale of the cakes. They had to manage this money to ensure that they could get all the ingredients they needed. This was part of the ‘Managing Money’ unit of the ASDAN Personal & Social Development programme that has now been successfully incorporated into all NCB courses.

“We got a few different recipes of ‘no bake’ cakes and we decided to make marshmallow cakes, rice crispy cakes and coconut chocolate balls. I think it’s important that we raise money for Children In Need and good that we can make it part of our course.”

Sophie Giles, NCB Student

“I bought a cake and I put some extra money in because I think it’s really important to help people who are less fortunate than us. I would hope that they would do the same for me if they could. I think there should always be time for fundraising to help other people.”

Tom Norris, NCB Student

Other students at NCB will also be involved various fundraising events at the College in the run up to Children In Need, with the hope of raising more money for this very worthy cause.
